Bailey Heng Chapter President Email: ucsb.gammaphi.president@gmail.com Year: Junior Major: Environmental Studies Why Gphi?  Gamma Phi Beta provides the most amazing environment to grow as a woman, sister, and friend. You are constantly surrounded by women who push you to be the best version of yourself, celebrate your victories, and help you stand when you fall. Gamma Phi provides an inclusive community full of diverse women with the most inspiring stories and wonderful hearts. GPhi truly provides a home away from home for its members and I'm so lucky to be able to call myself a Gamma Phi! Favorite Gphi Memory: My favorite Gamma Phi memory is from last summer: I was staying in the GPhi house over summer with a few sisters while we took summer classes and worked. One day, we all had nothing to do so one of my sisters suggested we hop in the car and make the drive to LA! A few of us piled into her car and, within an hour of her suggestion, we were on our way! I had never been to LA before so we did all of the stereotypical, tourist-y things and had so much fun. It was totally spontaneous and unplanned, but I love that girls in GPhi are always willing to try new, exciting adventured with me!

Gaby Martinez Assistant Vice President Email: ucsb.gammaphi.avp@gmail.com Year: 3rd year Major: Chicana & Chicano Studies  with a minor in Educational Studies Why GPhi?  As a first-generation student, Gamma Phi Beta presented itself as both a home and an opportunity to flourish. Delta Psi has challenged me to become stronger and value my true worth as a woman. Gamma Phi's core values of love, labor, learning, and loyalty beautifully illustrate that we are only as strong as our weakest link, and thus together, we build strong women who are resilient and capable of anything. Favorite GPhi Memory:  My favorite Gamma Phi Beta memories always seem to happen during the best time of the year...recruitment! Joining the Spring Quarter of my freshman year with two quarters of college under my belt, I knew I wanted a core group of dedicated women to help me through the rest of university. I was lucky enough to even able to live in the house that Fall alongside my sisters who became some of my favorite people. Right before Fall recruitment started, my Big and I barbecued outside in the courtyard and sang along to musicals with other sisters! We celebrated the sisters we had and the sisters we would soon gain.

They are my closest friends, the people who will be there for me all my life.    Favorite Gphi Memory:  My favorite memory is when I got to meet up will all of my sisters at Coachella. We all came separately but ended up having so much more fun when we were spending time with each other listening to our favorite artists!

Gamma Phi was a place where I felt at home immediately. I remember during recruitment I connected with one of the girls on such a cool level and I completely had to rethink my perception of what a sorority is and could be. I love our chapter’s focus on sisterhood and really trying to connect with each other on a deep level.    Favorite Gphi Memory:  So hard to pick just one! I would say it’s a tie between everyone mobbing to our annual ice skating sisterhood where we blast fun music and try desperately not to eat it (rip my right knee) or just the crazy late night conversations my roommates and I would have in our living room at the house.

Sisterhood ☽

GPhi Crescent Ball 2018 Inside-223.jpg

For the sisters at the Delta Psi chapter, sisterhood is the foundation to all our core values. All the things we achieve, including academics, philanthropy, and leadership, are all gained with a little help from our sisters. We pride ourselves in having the honor to help each other grow to be the best we can be. Whether we are at a philanthropy event for a different organization, a date function, or simply at a movie night, we make sure that we take the time to appreciate these golden moments with our sisters. After all, Robin Benway did say that there is one thing stronger than magic: sisterhood.

Of the innumerable benefits of joining a sorority, sisterhood events are the ones you can’t begin to replicate in other organizations. Whether we are in our chapter room, affectionately called “the chappy,” during the Bachelorette and cringing together when Ari changed his mind, or hiking to inspiration point at sunset, we make sisterhood time a priority. Between fun study hours during dead week, and Galentine's day cookie decorating, we always make time for our sisters. It isn’t difficult either because our sisters are the first ones we turn to for a late night freebs run or (for some of us) a 7 am actual run.

Philanthropy

bsg_logo_570x259.png

Gamma Phi Beta is nationally dedicated to providing experiences and resources that build spiritual, mental and social resiliency in girls. Our philanthropic focus is Building Strong Girls. Every year we host a pancake breakfast, and all the proceeds made from this event directly benefit Girls on the Run. This year we are very excited to be hosting our first ever Moonball, which will be a greek-wide kickball tournament that will also benefit our national organization.

Our chapter is also heavily involved in the local community and we work closely with Isla Vista Elementary planning holiday and cultural carnivals. Along with volunteering and serving our community our members love supporting other chapters philanthropic efforts by participating in all the fun philanthropies other organizations in our community host each quarter!

We are passionate about Building Strong Girls because we know today’s girls face more challenges than ever, making the need for a safe place with supportive mentors even greater. Gamma Phi Beta is giving girls the confidence to dream big and we are inspiring the female leaders of tomorrow.

Socials and Date Parties

Socials

Socials are themed gatherings with another fraternity or sports team where everyone dresses in costume. This is a fun way to meet other members of the UCSB community and bond in a fun way. Our favorite socials have been Paint Wars, Ragecoach, and more!

Date Parties

During fall quarter, we have Initiation Ball. This Ball is one that honors the initiation of new members, and it is held at a chic hotel. Winter quarter we went to Six Flags Magic Mountain and brought our dates on the roller coasters. This past year, our date party was court side at a Los Angeles Lakers game and we had the opportunity to take photos on the court with players. Spring quarter brings the best date night: Crescent Ball. Named after our organization’s symbol, Crescent Ball is the most extravagant and celebrates the accomplishments and memories of our graduating seniors. Past Crescent Balls were held at the Riviera Mansion and the Doubletree Resort Fess Parker in downtown Santa Barbara.
