On November 11, 1874 four women at Syracuse University came together to form a society they named Gamma Phi Beta. Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis, and Mary A. Bingham were courageous risk takers who sought to create a society for women in a man’s world. Though at the time women’s societies were given the same name as their male counterparts (fraternities), Dr. Frank Smalley coined the word “sorority” especially for Gamma Phi Beta.

The Delta Psi chapter was established at UCSB on November 19, 1983.

We aim to inspire the highest type of womanhood.

At Gamma Phi we strive to build confident women of character who celebrate sisterhood and make a difference in the world around us. We do this through our four core values of Love, Labor, Learning and Loyalty.

as women of the delta psi chapter, we aim to be informed members of our larger academic community. From proctored study hours at the house to peer tutoring programs, the chapter offers serveral resources geared toward academic success.
